2 Wednesday – October 2, 2013 Mr. Lombardi Do Now: 1. If you were to look through someone’s garbage, what would it tell you about that person? 2. Why is it possible to draw conclusions about a person based on their garbage? Aim: Why is archaeology an important tool in social studies?

3 Copy the following words/definitions into your notebook: 1.archaeology – The study of past human life and culture by the recovery and examination of artifacts. 2.artifacts – An object produced or shaped by human craft. 3.civilization – An advanced state of intellectual, cultural, and material development in human society. 4.social science – The study of human society and individual relationships in society. 5.anthropology – The study of the origin, behavior, and the physical, social, and cultural development of humans. 6.historian – A writer, student, or scholar of history. One who writes or compiles a chronological record of events. 7.critical thinking – (reasoning) Using evidence and analyzing different outcomes. Not basic recall.

7 Scientific Report The heart and lungs were healthy when he died. The man had eaten a soup 12 hours before he died. The soup was made up of seeds from Spring. Plants trapped with his body have been found. They are 2,000 years old.

8 Information Update Iron Age people buried their dead with neck rings as an offering to the Spring Goddess. German Tribes drowned cowards in swamps under sticks. The German tribes used to sacrifice slaves to the goddess of Spring. Have these facts changed your opinion?

10 Imagine it is the year 3013 and you have come across this rare artifact. What clues would it give you about the civilization it is from?

11 Summary What other artifacts could give future archaeologists clues about our civilization? What kind of clues would each artifact give? Why would each artifact give these clues? Why is archaeology an important tool in social studies?
