2   Welcome to the first day of our “GRID”! GRID stands for:  Grammar Day –short lessons on important points of grammar in order to improve our writing  Roots Day –learn roots, prefixes, and suffixes to expand our vocabularies and improve our reading  Independent Reading –read a book we choose independently  Dissection Day –analyze a short text, like a poem or article Purpose

4  Directions  THINK: Read the parts of speech handout.  PAIR: With a partner, label each box with the part of speech being described.  SHARE: Share out with the class.  Adjective  Adverb  Article  Conjunction  Interjection  Noun  Preposition  Pronoun  Verb

5 Using Modifiers to Provide Detail English II

6   In your RAW book, label a page with today’s date and the title, “Writing Workout.”  Follow the directions on each slide.  Use your notes to help you! Directions

7  Simple Sentence Directions  Write a sentence using only an article, a noun, an action verb, and the object of the verb. Example  The hornet stung me.

8  Adjective & Adverb Directions  Write the same sentence above, but add at least one adjective and at least one adverb. Example  The angry hornet stung me repeatedly.

9  Prepositional Phrase Directions  Rewrite the same sentence, but add 2 prepositional phrases. Example  The angry hornet with the bright yellow markings stung me repeatedly on the leg.

10  Participial Phrase Directions  Rewrite the same sentence, but ad at least one participial phrase.  Participial phrases begin with “-ing” verbs Example  Buzzing furiously, the angry hornet with the bright yellow markings stung me repeatedly on the leg.

11  Appositive Phrase Directions  Rewrite the same sentence, but add at least one appositive phrase.  Appositive phrases are noun phrases that describe another noun/pronoun.  They begin with “article + noun” Example  Buzzing furiously, the angry hornet with the bright yellow markings stung me, an innocent bystander, repeatedly on the leg.

12  Infinitive Phrase Directions  Rewrite the same sentence, but add at least one infinitive phrase.  Infinitive phrases are verb phrases that begin with “to + verb” Example  Buzzing furiously and mad enough to fight a giant, the angry hornet with the bright yellow markings stung me, an innocent bystander, repeatedly on the leg.

13   THINK: Compare your first sentence with your last sentence. What is the effect of adding these different parts of speech?  PAIR: Discuss with a partner.  SHARE: Share with the class!  Why is it important to know the parts of speech? Reflection
