What is it? Parallel structure means using the same pattern of words Example: Mary likes hiking, swimming, and bicycling. Non-Example: Mary likes hiking, swimming, and to bike.

Where is it? Parallel structure problems are often found in: 1.Lists 2.Conjunctions 3.Comparisons 4.Modifiers

Parallel Structure: Lists Check the verbs WRONG: When Odysseus is out at see, he kills the Cyclops, fights sea monsters, and Circe keeps him in her home for a year. RIGHT: When Odysseus is out at see, he kills the Cyclops, fights sea monsters, and stays in Circe’s home for a year.

Parallel Structure: Conjunctions Check the verbs WRONG: During the war, Ishmael has to choose between joining the army to protect himself or to fight for the rebels. RIGHT: During the war, Ishmael has to choose between joining the army to protect himself or fighting for the rebels.

Parallel Structure: Comparisons Check the verbs WRONG: Not only is Penelope loyal to Odysseus, but she also cares about her son. RIGHT: Not only is Penelope loyal to Odysseus, but she also is caring toward her son.

Parallel Structure: Modifiers Check the adjectives & adverbs WRONG: Gregor’s mother is weak, submissive, and feels no love toward Gregor. RIGHT: Gregor’s mother is weak, submissive, and unloving toward Gregor.
