7. What next for young people? The evidence One in 10 young people – so three in every classroom – has a clinically diagnosable mental health problem (Young Minds). Rates of mental health problems increase during adolescence. Among teenagers, rates of depression and anxiety have increased by 70% in the past 25 years. Half of those with a lifetime mental illness first experience symptoms by the age of 14. Only 25% of young people needing treatment actually receive it.
