Human Rights Rights that people have simply because they are human beings The dignity of all people must be respected The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) The statement of basic human rights and standards for government Adopted by the United Nations in 1948 Spearheaded by Eleanor Roosevelt All people have the right to LIBERTY, EDUCATION, POLITICAL, AND RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

Enforcing the UDHR It is a non-binding treaty, but it is supported by a system of other agreements International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights The Convention on the Rights of the Child There are specific treaties that condemn things like genocide and slavery Many countries pass laws making the document unenforceable within its borders Reservations

6. Human Rights Investigation At your table there is a situation written on the poster paper. Discuss briefly at your table if this situation rises to the level of a violation of human rights. Record your table’s opinion When prompted, rotate to another table, take your marker with you and look at the new situation and the previous group’s response Agree or disagree with the previous group, give your reason. Repeat, until all tables have been visited
