Air and Water Fountain Part 5

Daily Objective Air is matter and takes up space. Air pressure can move water.

Vocabulary Fountain - Something that uses compressed air to push water out of a container

Introduction Today we are going to continue investigating air using some new materials. You will work with a partner to use one bottle, two syringes, and two pieces of tubing. What is in this bottle? Can air get in and out? Air Yes, through the pipes.

Observations and Discussions Assembling The Bottle 1.Put one long pipe and one short pip through the holes in the rubber stopper. 2.Put the stopper into the bottle loosely. Push the long pip down to the bottom of the bottle, and push the short pipe in so it matched the top of the long pipe. 3.Push and twist the stopper into the bottle to make it tight.

Observation and Discussion Water Will Not Flow Now that you’ve had a few minutes of exploring lets add some water to our systems. 1.Remove the plunger from the barrel connected to the short tube. 2.Pour the water into the barrel. What happens? The bottle is already full of air so there is no where for the water to go. Air is matter and occupies space even though we can not see it.

Observation and Discussion Water Will Flow Now lets try something different. 1.One person hold up the barrel with the water in it. 2.The other person remove the other plunger. What happens? Air escapes out the open syringe as water flows in. The water flowing into the bottle pushes the air through the short tube ad out the open syringe.

Observation and Discussion Water Will Flow What will happen if you push the plunger into the barrel connected to the long tube? Yes, it makes bubbles! Air under pressure is forced into the water. The air forms bubbles, which rise to the surface and pop.

Observation and Discussion Water Will Flow Now try pulling the plunger connected to the long tube to see what happens? Yes, the water draws up into the syringe! The water is sucked up into the syringe through the pipe that goes to the bottom of the bottle.

Observation and Discussion Water Will Flow Lets try one more thing. What happened when you push in the plunger connected to the short pipe? Yes, water will come out of the bottle! When air is pushed into the bottle through the short pipe, the pressure in the bottle increases. The pressure on the water pushes it up the long pipe and into the open syringe or onto the person sitting close by.

What We Learned Air takes up __________ in a bottle. Air won’t let water __________ if it cannot get __________. ____________________ can push on water and make it move space in out Air pressure
