6 Obligation – Flight review (BFR) Every 24 months 1 hour ground on Part 91 (operating and flight rules) 1 hour flight with an instructor (“at the discretion of the persion giving the review”) Basic pilot proficiency, review Legally required

7 Encouraged - Wings Every 12 months Emphasis is on safety Must attend one FAA sponsored or sanctioned safety seminar or training program Attendance verified and signed by FAA SPM, FAA inspector, ASC involved in conducting the seminar Training different for each aircraft category LTA: 1 hour ground, 2 hours flight Training content specified for each category Recurrent training, proficiency (instructors) basic, high-performance, emergency

8 Encouraged - Wings Practical motivation A pilot need not accomplish the flight review requirements of 14 CFR part 61, ~ 61.56 if, since the beginning of the 24 th calendar month before the month in which that pilot acts as pilot in command, he or she has satisfactorily completed one or more phases of an FAA- sponsored Pilot Proficiency Award Program in an aircraft (reference 61.56(1)). i.e., complete Wings phase, get BFR bring certificate to festivals

9 Specific Requirements - LTA One hour of ground training to include fuel management, refueling, proper inflation procedures, review of the flight manual, and proper weather check. One hour of flight training to include approaches, touch-and-go, level flight, rapid descent and level out and simulated landing in a congested area. One hour of flight training to include relighting the pilot light, simulated high wind/short field landings, and other simulated emergency situations.

10 Endorsement sample Endorsement should read substantively as follows: Mr./Ms._________________, holder of pilot certificate no.___________, has satisfactorily completed the training requirements outlined in Advisory Circular 61-91H, paragraph 7e /s/ (date) M. Smith, 385652472 CPHAB

11 Completing Wings phases All requirements for a phase must happen within 12 months 12 months must pass between completing a phase and applying for the next award i.e., one phase per year at most Send application to FSDO Safety Program Manager

12 Wings can be fun! Get to fly with different pilots People have different viewpoints, skills Can complete with different pilots Date determined by flight completion date Expand experience e.g., long jump, high-performance More frequent More like training, less like checkride
