However, for some of the poorest people in the developing world, recycling often isn’t a choice, but a necessity of life.” ●300 000 people make a living by recycling waste ●They recycle up to 85% of all waste material produced ●UK recycles less than 20% of all waste material produced ●Dharavi is known as the ‘ecological heart of Mumbai’

Challenges ●1 toilet for every 1440 people ●Water becomes contaminated during monsoon season ●50% higher death rate than upper- and middle-class areas during this time

Redevelopment plans for Dharavi Page 95 of textbook ●Plan to transform slum into high-rise housing facilities ●Each of Dharavi’s 57 000 residents would get 21 square metres of living space ●Not all Dharavi residents are happy with this plan ●Many are happy with their current lifestyle ●“Many have lived their entire lives in Dharavi and do not want to trade their culture for the redeveloped life”

Flash Debate TOPIC: The redevelopment proposal is a good thing for the people of Dharavi. ●The class will be split into two groups ●Each group will be given a side to argue, either ‘in support of’ or ‘against’ the topic ●You will be given time to come up with arguments to support your side ●We will then come together and sit in a circle. Each side will present their arguments ●We will then discuss the topic as a group
