2 Agenda Review Parts of Speech Practice identifying Parts of Speech END GOAL: Be able to accurately identify Parts of Speech so that we can move on to more ACT Grammar. Objectives: I can take notes on the parts of speech, I can collaborate with a partner to identify the parts of speech of words in a sentence, I can work individually to identify the parts of speech

4 Verb An action word or State of Being word Have, do, work, sing, listen, must, can, (to) be, own, dance, is, run Mrs. McLaughlin is a teacher. I like school. She danced all night.

5 Noun A person, place, thing, idea Pen, dog, work, music, town, London, teacher, love, town This is my dog. She is a teacher. I like London.

6 Adjective A word that describes a noun Answers the questions which one, how many or what kind? Good, big, red, interesting, funny, suspicious, that I have two dogs. My mom is interesting. I want a yellow pen.

7 Adverb A word that describes a verb, adjective, or adverb Answers the questions how, when, where, why and how often? Quickly, silently, well, badly, very, really, quietly. often end in ly My sister eats quickly. My brother is very hungry. My mom talks quietly.

8 Pronoun A word that replaces or takes the place of a noun I, you, he, she, it, we, they Sara runs track. She is fast. I love candy and chocolate. They are my favorite foods.

9 Preposition A word that links a noun to another word Shows location, time, direction or position To, at, after, on, before, behind, until, within, from, down, off, during We went to school on Monday. My book is on the table. My book is under the table My book is near the table. My book is below the table I cannot go until I am finished. I cannot go before my work is finished.

11 Conjunctions A word that joins clauses or sentences or words And, but, or I like cats and dogs. I like chocolate cake but I do not like vanilla cake.

12 Interjections A short exclamation, sometimes inserted into a sentence Expresses an emotion too Oh!, ouch!, well, Hooray! No! Ouch! That hurts! Well, I don’t know. Hi, what’s your name?

13 Practice with a Partner For each sentence, identify the part of speech of every word Write your answers in your notebook Turn to your partner to collaborate and to identify the correct part of speech.
