What are we learning? 3 rd Quarter Goals and Objectives Science – Electricity and Magnetism Literacy – Main idea and details, summarizing, comparing and contrasting (Fiction and Nonfiction), text structure, fact and opinion, problem/solution, word meanings through prefix and suffix study (Wordbuild), journaling, narrative writing, AR Math – Fractions and Decimals Social Studies – NC Government and Symbols

Let’s Work Together Please continue to encourage your student to always do their best work. Please continue to encourage your student to pay close attention and to listen carefully. Check with your student about supply levels – they may need to replenish their paper/pencil supply. Remember – Blue folders come home each Tuesday. Three progress reports dates have been set. You must log onto Parent Assistant to see your child’s grades. Please sign the Parent Communication Log when you receive the email – do not sign if you don’t get a report – please let me know if you do not receive a report.

AR and STAR Update Much improvement in reading has been noticed during 2 nd quarter. 10 out of 26 students met and/or exceeded their 2 nd quarter AR goals and will receive school wide prizes as well as extra recess time. The majority of our students maintained an average percent of 85% or greater. For third quarter, our class goals are to have all of our students earn at least 10 points and to have at least half of our class or more to meet and exceed their goals. Encourage nonfiction reading.

Quarterly Test Results Math – 59 % proficient Reading – 70 % proficient We will be reviewing quarter tests in class as well as remediating students who were below 70 % proficient.

Raleigh Field Trip March 9 th, 2011 Be at school by 6:30, we will leave at 7:00! Bring a bag lunch or request one from the cafeteria. Students can bring a bag with electronic games, CD players, or books to read. Any games or music must be appropriate for school. Headphones or the ability to turn down/off sound is required. All items are the responsibility of the student! Gift shop money – no more than $25. We will return around 5:00 or 5:30. Places we will visit: –Museum of History –The Capital Building –Natural Sciences Museum –The Legislative Building This trip is in connection with our Social Studies unit on NC Government and Symbols, as well as our Science unit on animals. $20 by February 28 th

Volunteers Needed As we approach the end of the year and EOG’s, it is evident that we have students in our class who are in need of extra support and encouragement in reading and math. If you can provide at least 30 minutes of time once or twice a week to work with a small group of students or an individual student, please let me know. The best time to volunteer is between 11:15 and 12:00.
