1 Imagine you & your group of classmates are colonizing a new world You will create and agree on a FIVE SENTENCE compact that will govern your colony A few facts you must remember as you are prepared to step foot onto this new world you hope to make your new home: difficult, 2 month journey Exhausted NOT culturally heterogeneous – specifically, some of your group does not share all of the same beliefs limited supplies & no guaranteed food supply in New World Mixture of men, women, & children near mutiny “none had power to command them”

2 Unlike the Jamestown colonists (also English) or the Spanish, the New England colonists came to the New World for religious freedom What does this mean? Pilgrim – a person who travels a long distance for religious reasons *Pilgrims will settle Plymouth

3 Some Colonists (like the Pilgrims) Moved to The New World for Religious Freedom

4 Europeans did not have the freedom of religion – they had to follow the established faith of the monarchy (King or Queen) People who did not were often PERSECUTED for their beliefs. This often meant being IMPRISONED or EXECUTED (killed). OR

5 In September 1620, more than 100 men, women, and children set sail aboard a small ship called the MAYFLOWER. After a long, difficult journey they landed on the shore of CAPE COD, in present day Massachusetts. They called their new settlement PLYMOUTH.
