Government Cameroon Ministry of Economy and Spatial Planning Steering Comittee Goals: - Protect environment - Exploit area - Develop country -Boost economy Source: www.cia.gov/library/publications/dhe-world-factbook Population 18.5M (estimate)

Royal Haskoning Aims To win the tender by creating a project proposal for the sustainable development of a whole (Greenfield) area, by providing: (Advanced) solutions for the development of an industrial zone (to be an eco-industrial park). Concept solutions/proposal for the development of the whole area in a sustainable way. Develop a “model concept” of sustainable industrial development for developing countries.

Systems thinking Sustainable Solutions Integration of Social, Environmental and Technical disciplines (People, Planet, Prosperity) The Industrial Ecology approach

Our Goal We gain experience of applying Industrial Ecology principles and integrating them in a real case by doing this project. This project proposal should help and/or inspire Royal Haskoning to win the call for tender proposed by the Cameroon government for the development of the industrial zone and maybe later the development of the whole area.

The Area

Backcasting overview

Backcasting 2 Analysing the present situation: Existence (current problems) Resources (Stakeholder inventory) Incentives (existing projects)

Backcasting 3 Envision possible future situations: Eco-Industrial Complex Local Environmental Rehabilitation 100% Renewable Energy Integration of the government ideals and local lives Population welfare: richness of culture/healthcare/education

Backcasting 4 Build scenarios –Create concepts for the industrial site –Elaborate on local social issues (eg. providing jobs, healthcare, education & sanitary solutions) –Feasability and cost estimation Think about implementation of the project (Especially in organisational and financing terms)

Researched Stakeholders Renewable energy potential Aluminium refinery integration General facts and resources of the country Indigenous people Water management Kribi area

Draft Stakeholders PeopleProfit MinistryRio Tinto Alcan Steering CommitteePlantations Indigenous PeopleOther Companies Future workforce(Port, Gas, Coastal sand, Foresters) Planet NGO’s Ecotourism

Renewables Solar Possibilities mainly in off grid appliances Geothermal Main sources north of the area Wind Not much on land, offshore possible Biofuels Algae possible, maybe classical biofuels Hydro Already being build, possibilities for extending this effort

Renewables

Aluminium refinery Input:Output: BauxiteAluminium EnergyHeat WaterWastewater Possibilities: Integrating industry Generate electricity Utilize waste heat Bauxite mining in the country

Opportunities in the Country Kyoto Protocol Cameroon has signed the protocol, carbon trading possible Millennium goals The trend in the country is that they get closer to reaching the goals. Development is made with both educational, health and poverty goals

Indigenous people Hunter Gatherers Tourist attraction though they rarely benefit Indigenous People Plan (IPP) Minorities should be specifically protected (land rights for the Pygmies)

To Do Make the scenarios for the backcasting Make a preliminary plan of the developement of the Industrial zone Interviews with experts & research on CO2 (trading) Similar projects Logistics Eco Tourism Ecology and biodiversity
