3 29 April 2009 Key to Obama Foreign Policy Is Expanded Global Engagement Washington — President Obama set three major foreign policy goals when his administration began 100 days ago: re-establish America’s standing in the world; create dialogue with friends, partners and adversaries based on mutual respect; and work together in building partnerships. “We believe in advancing not only the United States’ interests, but also interests globally,” Mike Hammer, a spokesman for the National Security Council

4 US Government & USAID Commitment to Community Colleges (Michael Yates, USAID) In light of such successes, and the growing international interest that we see - the US Government is expanding its efforts to help US community colleges collaborate with developing country partners to strengthen the quality and relevance of education and training. This expanded effort reflects the President’s commitment to renewing our engagement worldwide, and the broad USG conviction that community colleges can be vital assets in that effort. For example, in November 2009, in collaboration with the Department of State, the Department of Education, and our partners at Higher Education for Development, USAID helped support a small grants program to help US community colleges work with partners in the Broader Middle East and North Africa, to foster institutional and systemic reforms to improve the quality of education at community and technical colleges in the region…..

5 The mission of the North Carolina Community College System is to open the door to high-quality, accessible educational opportunities that minimize barriers to post-secondary education, maximize student success, develop a globally and multi-culturally competent workforce, and improve the lives and well-being of individuals by providing:

6 CPCC Action Plan updated New focus: Globalization and International Learning as a whole rather than stressing study-work-service abroad only. Strong suggestion to more efficiently organize around this theme (Durham Tech model/ Center for the Global Learner) Funds/budget would go for all efforts to internationalize including, but not limited to, study- abroad scholarships. Global Learner Consortium – NCCCS New scholarships to pursue

7 NC Community College Global Learner Consortium The purpose of the Consortium is to support the member colleges of the consortium as they seek to promote the economic survival and well-being of their constituent communities through the education of a globally competent citizenry and workforce. 4 Regions: CPCC is in Central Region Meeting April 16 with Regional group
