3 Bell Ringer In your everyday life how many times a day do you use bar soap? What do you use soap used for? When do you use detergent?

4 Demonstration 20 mL of vegetable oil is heated 10 mL of NaOH and 10 mL of ethanol are also heated. These two are then mixed together. The process can take 5- 10 minutes. What do you see happening with this demonstration?

5 Look at a molecule of soap made from olive oil. What major functional groups do you see present on the molecule? Is there something unique about the molecule? What do you think is unique? Share with a partner.

7 In Closing… What have you learned about soap today? History? Chemicals? Modern Soap? For homework finish the worksheet and bring it back tomorrow.
