Our Acceptable Use Policy An Overview
3
What is an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)?
4
An AUP is a written document that provides specific rules and guidelines whose purpose is to ensure the appropriate use of computer facilities and network resources.
5
Why do we need an AUP? Protects stakeholdersProtects computer systems Sets clear rulesDetails violation process
6
The National Education Association (NEA) suggests that an effective AUP contain the following six elements: a preamble a definition section a policy statement an acceptable uses section an unacceptable uses section a violations/sanctions section http://www.educationworld.com/a_curr/curr093.shtml
7
Preamble The preamble explains why the policy is needed, its goals, and the process of developing the policy. This section should say that the school's overall code of conduct also applies to online activity.
8
Definition Section The definition section defines key words used in the policy. Words and terms such as Internet, computer network, education purpose, and other possibly ambiguous terms need to be defined and explained to ensure, teacher, student and parent comprehension.
9
Policy Statement A policy statement must tell what computer services are covered by the AUP and the circumstances under which a person can use computer services.
10
Acceptable Uses The acceptable uses section defines appropriate use of the computer network.
11
Unacceptable Uses The unacceptable uses section should give clear, specific examples of what constitutes unacceptable use.
12
Violations & Sanctions The violations/sanctions section should explain how to report violations of the policy and what the consequences should be for violators. Typically not this SEVERE!
13
Violations & Sanctions "As a practical matter," says the NEA, "the AUP may simply provide that violations will be handled in accordance with the school's general disciplinary code. http://www.educationworld.com/a_curr/curr093.shtml
14
Goal # One! Students MUST be kept SAFE!
15
An AUP 4 Teachers 2 Teachers have a particularly important role in our AUP. While appropriate uses and violations do apply to teachers, they should be especially concerned with security of critical and private information (data) and computer hardware/software.
16
Teacher Responsibility It is VERY important that teachers safeguard student information that is entrusted to them. Confidential files must be secure. Valuable computer equipment must be secure. Equipment can only be used for authorized purposes and must be signed out if removed from school premises. Moving of hardware containing confidential files requires extra safeguarding and must never be left unattended.
17
Our Teacher/Student AUP Covers: Electronic Data & Information Security Electronic Transactions and Signatures Physical Security Systems and Applications Security Network Security Conduct and Use Noncompliance http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/igt-ra.shtm

Put the AUP to Work! Teacher involvement in implementing our AUP is critical. Students must know about it, understand it and its importance. It is up to each teacher to make sure students are aware of the AUP, know how and why it is used, and understand the consequences of violations.
26
Helpful Suggestions Read and fully understand the AUP yourself Post a copy in your classroom Post a copy in your On-line classroom Include a reference to it in your syllabus Send a copy home for parents to sign
27
Protect Yourself Read and fully understand the AUP Understand what is Unacceptable Use Understand the Consequences Assume EVERYTHING you do is recorded Minimize or eliminate any personal use
