1. STATUS REPORT #3 DIGITAL UNDERWATER COMMUNICATION (DUC) GROUP 5 Jeff Prevost, Alexandra Camacho, Jennifer Moyer, Robert Mills February 16, 2009

2. Overall Need  Create a device divers can use to efficiently and inexpensively communicate underwater to facilitate a safe and rewarding dive experience.

3. Tasks Completed  Wrote the c program to display the two main menus  Used push-buttons on dragon board to simulate user input  Able to send messages thru serial port to a computer  Purchased two waterproof cases  Purchased transducers(acoustic @ 40kHz )  Chose input device (Push-buttons)  Decided to encode messages in order to only send one byte of data per transmission

4. Ongoing Tasks  Trying to locate a transducer with a lower Q so as to be able to use FSK modulation  Looking at the possibility of using a pulse-width modulation type scheme  Send information to dragon board by means of a computer in order to finish most of the programming

5. Upcoming Milestones  Complete and upload website(2/18/2009)  Build communications prototype using acoustic transducers (2/23/2009)  Build power management circuitry (2/23/2009)  Successfully receive bytes of data from computer, decode them, and display messages on screen (2/23/2009)
