2 March 2010 What is Certification? A formalized approach by Rotary International to ensure student safety Rotary is committed to creating and maintaining the safest possible environment for all participants in Rotary activities It is the duty of all Rotarians, Rotarians’ spouses, partners, and other volunteers to safeguard to the best of their ability the welfare of and to prevent the physical, sexual or emotional abuse of children and young people with whom they come into contact.

3 March 2010 Who needs to be certified? Anyone working with youth under 19 RYLA, Interact, Youth Exchange Club initiated youth programs

4 March 2010 Why are we asking for this? Legal requirement under the rules of D5040 incorporation To protect you and your Rotary Club To protect us, D5040 has a $1 Million rider for abuse in our club insurance policies

5 March 2010 Let’s Jump on board! How do we get certified? Volunteer Information Sheets Criminal Record Checks Must be updated every 5 years

6 March 2010 How should we handle this is our clubs? Designate a Certification Coordinator Distribute the volunteer forms and a CRC form to each Rotarian who works with youth – don’t forget the spouses and partners If there is a cost to get a CRC, perhaps the club should agree to pay the cost Collect the forms and CRCs and send the completed forms to Sue Godey

8 March 2010 What must we have on file? Volunteer forms and CRCs for all Rotarians and spouses/partners working with the YE student Host family forms and CRCs for the host parents and any adult 19 or older living at home MUST have forms by June 30, 2010 OR D5040 will not be compliant

11 March 2010 YE Certification – Orientation and Training 1.A policy which outlines the content & frequency of training for participants 2.Records that the required training has taken place 3.A process for the training of students, host families, DG and District leaders, counselors, youth exchange officers

12 March 2010 Program Administration Policy which includes 1.A system for compliance at the club level 2.A retention policy for student, volunteer and host family applications A retention policy requires D5040 Youth Exchange to have a secure storage for all applications and any documents pertaining to certification
