Memo v. Letter Memos Used internally Serve various purposes (to inform, to propose, to motivate, to report) Format may vary, but parts include to/from/date/subject lines Optional format features: headers See 292 ff. for more info and 297 for a sample. We also have a sample under General Tools on Oncourse. Letters used externally communicate formality, respect, authority five major parts (heading, inside address, salutation, body, complimentary close) See 284 ff. for more info and 714 for sample thank you letter. Many samples appear in the text, and we have a sample under General Tools on Oncourse.

Developing Your Statement of Purpose Take a minute to create a purpose statement for your interview memo (like we did for the interview guide) Now we’ll look at the sample interview memo on Oncourse, under Tools In groups, discuss how well it meets (or fails to meet) the criteria for the assignment

For Next Time Before Class Read chapters 8 and 9 (business correspondence) Conduct your interview and draft your memo and thank you letter and bring copies In Class Workshop on Project 1 Introduction of Project 2
