2. Technology Changes Lives In the early 1920’s, most people in the US lived on farms or in small country towns. During WWI, rural people began moving to cities in large numbers. Instead of making a living by farming, they took jobs in factories and other businesses. By 1920, more Americans lived in urban areas than in rural areas. Many people also bought cars for the fist time in the 1920’s especially those built on Henry For’s assembly lines. The number of cars n the road more than doubled between 1920 and 1929

3. Effects of New Technology People traveled long distances – Farmers/supplies – Family vacation (tour US) Electricity (urban areas) – 1920 35% – 1929 70% New appliances – Vacuum cleaner &washing machine

4. A Changing Society Roaring 20’s – People felt like life was “roaring” forward like a speeding car. Women – College – Worked outside the home – Flappers (short hair & knee length skirts) – 19 th Amendment (vote)

5. Jazz and the Harlem Renaissance *Jazz (new style of music) *Jazz – A lot of improvisation Musicians decide what notes to play as they perform. – Louis Armstrong (popular singer) – Jazz was influenced by the African American culture.

Problems of the 1920’s Prejudice – African Americans, Asian Americans, and Mexican Americans KKK (Ku Klux Klan) – Spread hatred against Immigrants, African Americans, Jewish people, and Catholics 5 million members by the mid-1920’s Brave people spoke out against the KKK – By 1929 its membership had decreased.

10. Prohibition Problem – 18 th Amendment Ratified in 1917 It made selling and drinking alcoholic beverages illegal. The time that this was in effect is called the Prohibition Era. – Prohibition means the act of forbidding something. Criminals made/sold alcohol. Repealed with the 21 st amendment in 1933.
