4  Amelia Earhart is famous for being the first woman to fly across the Atlantic.  Three other women attempted the flight before Amelia but died.  She came back to New York after her flight and she was greeted by a Ticker Tape Parade and a reception by President Calvin Coolidge.

5  In 1937, Amelia wanted to be the first woman to fly around the world.  Her husband George asked why she wanted to attempt such a trip.  She replied “it’s my frosting on the cake”

6  On June 1, 1937, Amelia and Fred Noonan began their 29000 journey around the world.  They started in Miami.  On July 2, 1937, they had 7000 miles to go.  They left Lae, New Guinea headed toward Howland Island, the last stop before Hawaii and then on to Oakland California.

7  At 7:45 pm: "We must be on you, but we cannot see you. Fuel is running low. Been unable to reach you by radio. We are flying at 1,000 feet." "We are running north and south.  Her plane was never found.  She wrote a letter to her husband in the event of her death:

8  “Please know I am quite aware of the hazards. I want to do it because I want to do it. Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others”
