3 NEW TRENDS IN 19th & 20th CENTURIES ► Symbolism is a 19th-century movement ► art became infused with exaggerated sensitivity and a mysticism. ► continuation of the Romantic tradition, Caspar David Friedrich and others. ► the Symbolists mined mythology and dream imagery as a visual language of the soul.

4 ETYMOLOGY ► The name "symbolist" itself was first applied by the critic Jean Moéas, who invented the term. ► The term "symbolism" is derived from the word "symbol" which derives from the Latin symbolum, a symbol of faith, a sign of recognition

5 MOVEMENT ► Symbolists believed that art should represent absolute truths that could only be described indirectly. ► they wrote or painted in a very metaphorical and suggestive manner. ► they choose particular images or objects with symbolic meaning. ► Jean Moréas published the Symbolist Manifesato. ► Moréas announced that symbolism was hostile to "plain meanings, declamations, false sentimentality and matter-of-fact description", and that its goal instead was to "clothe the Ideal in a perceptible form" whose "goal was not in itself, but whose sole purpose was to express the Ideal"

6 THE MANIFESTO ► Jean Moréas published the Symbolist Manifesato in 1886 in the newspaer called Le FIGARO. ► It was said:that symbolism was hostile to "plain meanings, declamations, false sentimentality and matter-of-fact description„. ► Symbolist goal was to "clothe the Ideal in a perceptible form" whose "goal was not in itself, but whose sole purpose was to express the Ideal"

7 GUSTAVE MOREAU (1826 - 1898) ► French Symbolist painter. ► known for his erotic paintings of mythological and religious subjects. ► was famost for technical experiments, including scraping his canvases ► His nonfigurative paintings: were done in a loose manner using thick impasto Moreau was called a herald of Abstract expressionism. 8 ODILON REDON (1840- 1916) ► French Symbolist painter, lithographer, and etcher. ► Famous for his considerable poetic sensitivity and ► imagination. ► His prints explore fantastic themes. ► Redon's work represents: ► an exploration of his internal feelings. ► He himself wanted to "place the visible at the service of the invisible”

9 THE PRE-RAPHAELITES Rossetti Rossetti ► In 1848, as revolutions swept continental Europe striving for social reforms. ► seven rebellious young artists in London formed a secret society with the aim of creating a new British art. ► They called themselves the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. ► the name indicates the chief source of their inspiration. ► Inspired by the literature, historical events and mythology. E.g.: Shakespeare ► Unhappy with the contemporary academic trends.
