Today we will compute simple division of fractions. Compute = figure out Division = to break a number of items into groups that have the same amount. Fraction = part of a whole number Concept
2
There are 4 oranges and you want to cut them each in half (½). How many pieces will you have? APK 4 ½ =8
3
Division means to break a number of items into groups that have the same amount. Division CD
4
Fraction A fraction is a number (numerator and denominator) that shows part of a whole set. An example: CD Numerator Denominator
5
Percent Percent means per hundred. It is another way of saying “out of one hundred.” CD
6
Reciprocal Reciprocal - means to invert or flip a fraction. 1212 2121 5353 3535 1212 = __ 2 1 Example 1: The reciprocal of is. Example 2: The reciprocal of is.
7
How to Compute simple division of a Fraction To compute 4 ½, you first must multiply 4 by the reciprocal of 1/2. GP 4 ½ = 4X 2121 = 8
8
To compute 12 ¾, you first must multiply 12 by the reciprocal of ¾. GP 12 ¾ = 12X 4343 = 48 3
9
To compute ½ ¾, you first must multiply ½ by the reciprocal of ¾. GP ½ ¾ = 1212 X 4343 = 4646
10
Why is understanding how to compute simple division of fractions important? You will know how to divide whole numbers and fractions by a fraction. It will be tested on future CST exams! What are other reasons why it is important to know how to find percent equivalents for common fractions. IMP
11
Lets see if we can compute simple division of a fraction To compute 30 ½, you first must multiply 30 by the reciprocal of 1/2. GP 30 ½ = 30X 2121 = 60
12
To compute 15 ¾, you first must multiply 15 by the reciprocal of ¾. GP 15 ¾ = 15X 4343 = 60 3
13
To compute ½ ¼, you first must multiply ½ by the reciprocal of ¼. GP ½ ¼ = 1212 X 4141 = 4242
14
Let’s review how to compute simple division of fractions. What is divison? What are fractions? Division means to break a number of items into groups that have the same amount. A fraction is a number (numerator and denominator) that shows part of a whole set.
