Parts of a Sentence  Every sentence has 2 parts:  Subject tells whom or what the sentence is about  Predicate tells what the subject does, is, has, or feels (verb!)  Complete Subject- all the words in the subject  Complete Predicate- all the words in the predicate  Simple Subject- the MAIN word or words in the complete subject  Simple Predicate- the MAIN word or words in the predicate. Made up of at least one VERB (a word that shows action or being). Can have one or more helping verbs.

6. Simple Subjects & Simple Predicates  Simple Subject- the MAIN word or words in the complete subject  Simple Predicate- the MAIN word or words. Made up of at least one VERB (a word that shows action or being). Compound Subjects & Compound Predicates  Compound Subject- When more than one simple subject is joined with AND or OR.  Compound Predicate- When a sentence has two or more simple predicates joined by AND or OR. Try These: A book or an encyclopedia is a good place to find information. Many pots and pans are piled up in the sink. Cars and buses are some convenient modes of transportation. Movie goers can purchase a ticket and enter. Frank caught and dribbled the ball. Tourists purchased souvenirs or photographed the sights at our stops. The students and teachers walked, looked at exhibits, and listened to the guide.

9. Plural & Possessive Nouns  PLURAL. Add –s or –es to most singular nouns to make them plural. (boy— two boys, Lewis– the Lewises)  SINGULAR POSSESSIVE. Add ‘s to show possession or ownership. (a boy’s book, Jess’s locker)  PLURAL POSSESSIVE. When it belongs to more than one. Add an apostrophe after the s. (two boys’ shoes, the students’ papers)  PLURAL POSSESSIVE. More than one, plural nouns that do not end in s... Add ‘s. (the children’s area, the mice’s cage)

10. Action Verbs  ACTION VERBS tell what the subject does or did. Sometimes the verb tells about actions that cannot be seen. John collects baseball cards. He wonders what the cards are worth. John sorts and organizes his cards chronologically. John’s friends trade with him occasionally. He appreciates the rare ones most of all.
