Artificial Selection An observation of how species change over time
4
All dogs are part of one species, Canis familiaris. Dogs originally came from wolves, Canis lupus. A species is an organism that can breed and produce offspring that can survive and also breed. There are over 400 breeds of dog. A breed is a subspecies. It takes many generations to get a new breed.

Task-group Analyze traits and decide on the best two breeds to mate. Fill out ownership card. Assign one breed to be the mother and one to be the father. Use the penny to determine whether the mother’s feature or the father’s feature will be passed on to the pup for each trait. As a group describe the variation in your pups. If you were going to keep on breeding, which pup would make the best parent for the next generation and why?

Task-individual Write a paragraph describing the process of artificial selection in your own words, using dogs or another organism as an example. Use the words variation, trait, selection in your paragraph.
