Understand Operating Systems Operating system A program that oversees and controls everything on a computer Uses –Information to and from memory and peripheral devices –Run programs –Maintain filing system –Display the User interface

Understand Operating Systems User Interface: the user interaction with the computer Two types of software –System Software –Application software

Understand Operating Systems System Software –Operating system –Utility programs Used to operate and maintain computer’s data management tasks Application Software –An example Microsoft Office

Understand Operating Systems Platform –A computer system and its version of operating system IBM PC’s and its clones with an Intel CPU use Microsoft Window Macintosh computers run MacOS IBM PCs or compatibles running Unix operating systems

The evolution of Operating Systems Unix System –Developed in the early 1970s for multiuser computers –Very powerful but not user-friendly Features –Multitasking: more than one program at a time –Secure networking –Multiprocessing –File management –Client/server networking

Xerox’s Parc Research The first computer system to use a GUI (graphical user interface) GUI –Point and click no need to memorize commands –Icons –Pull-down lists

MS-DOS ( Microsoft Disk Operating System ) Microsoft used this command-line similar to Unix for its operating systems in the early 80s and 90s

Current Operating System Microsoft introduced its GUI Windows in mid 80s –GUI over its MS-DOS MacOs introduced by Apple as the first GUI for personal computer users in the early 80s similar to the Xerox’s PARC Mac users –First to rely on the mouse –First to depend on WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get)

Up and Coming Operating Systems Linux Powerful for PCs based on Unix Natural language interfaces

Work with Utility Programs exercise 4 File management Accessibility Utility Programs Communication and Entertainment Security Utility

Utility programs: Behind the scenes –File Management Utility Programs (housekeeping duties) Cleaners: disk cleanup, recycle bin Error Checking Defragmentation: reassembles pieces of continuous file File compression Backup

Work with Utility Programs Accessibility Utility Programs –Screen magnifier –Screen reader –Onscreen keyboard –Speech recognition

Work with Utility Programs Communication and Entertainment Utility programs –Remote control –SOHO (small office, home office network setup –Internet setup –Sound recorder –Audio/video file players (media player)

Work with Utility Programs Security Utility Programs –Antivirus –Firewall –Data encryption –File wiping
