There is a set of guidelines published by the Department of Education (2008)which sets the minimum nutritional standards for school meals and other foods sold within school It is a requirement of Health Promoting Schools to meet these standards Developing a Food Policy ensures that › Nutritional standards are met › Better chance of promoting healthy lifestyle (whole school approach) › Beneficial changes can be long term

30% 2-15 year olds overweight/obese In 2005, 41% adult males and 29% adult females overweight/obese Overweight/obesity increases risk of morbidity and mortality Inactivity increases risk of weight gain and increased risk of Cardiovascular Disease Healthy lifestyle leads to increased self esteem, improved social interaction and concentration Around 90% packed lunches are high in fat and sugar, almost half contain no fruit or vegetables; 70% do not meet nutritional standards

A document which states how the school makes a positive contribution to the health and wellbeing of pupils, staff and visitors Establishes effective school-catering relationship Ensures sustainability in relation to healthy eating provision Communicates action plan to all members of the school community

Establish what the current situation is Measure this against what the situation should be Decide what needs to change Develop ways of making these changes Present these for consideration Compose policy Set a date for first audit of the policy

Give feedback on questionnaires Feedback on changes you would like to see Hand out 10 questionnaires each to your form class for completion to aid data collection Have an input into how the feedback is given to the wider school community
