Why do we Celebrate Columbus Day? Columbus Day is celebrated in the United States to honor Christopher Columbus's first voyage to America in 1492. Columbus actually landed in America on October 12 th, 1492, but Columbus Day is always celebrated on the second Monday of October.

Christopher Columbus Discoveries/Outcomes Explored Cuba and Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic) Met Native Americans (Taino) and traded gold with them. Returned to Palos on March 15 th. Made three more voyages to explore the Caribbean region. 1493-1496, 1498- 1500, 1502-1504

Christopher Columbus Opinion Did not “discover” America since many natives were already there. –Maybe they came from Asia –Maybe Vikings and other sailors came before him. Started commerce between Europe and Americas Was an excellent sailor and explorer.

Living Conditions You would work in four-hour shifts doing things cleaning the deck, working the sails and checking the ropes and cargo. When you weren’t working, you would sleep anywhere you found space. You would receive only one hot meal a day and your diet would be biscuits, pickled or salted meat, dried peas, cheese, wine, and fresh-caught fish.
