Tertiary Activity Also known as the service industry Involves providing services to people Examples include: Doctor, lawyer, waitress, tourism industry, mechanic, teacher

Public vs. Private Tertiary Activity Private service industry is run by private business and requires that a profit be made from the service. Ex. Mechanics, Lawyers, Tourism. Public Service industry is most often run by the government and is not for profit. It does however, use the tax payers money. Ex./ Health Care, Eastern School Board.

4 Types of Tertiary Activities 1. Distributive activities: involves the transportation and sale of all products from manufacturer to consumer. ex. truck driver, warehouse manager, sales person 2. Financial Activity: involves banks, insurance companies, financial advising companies, and trust companies.

4 Types of Tertiary Activities 3. Personal Service: involves a wide range of services from legal services, to food services, to entertainment and counselling services. 4. Government service: Public service industry is operated by Government and is not for profit. On the contrary it cost tax payers money. Ex. Education, health care, mail, water, sewer, roads. Hence the term “ public servant”

It is important to note that many careers in the tertiary sector can not be classified as public or private. A teacher can work in the public school system which is public service or s/he can work for a private college which is private service. Why does the government provide some tertiary services?

Quaternary Activity Quaternary Activity: Is service based like the tertiary sector, but it entails the use of high technology to produce, retrieve, store and distribute information. Examples include: 1.Using computers to develop information- processing software. 2.Using computers to analyze city traffic flows to provide information on suitable locations for new businesses.
