Americans Head West 1800 – 400,000 people west of Apps 1861 – more people west of Apps then on coast moved west for religious reasons and own farms John Louis O’Sullivan called it Manifest Destiny ► The idea that God had given the continent to Americans and wanted them to settle western lands ► Squatters – settled on land they did not own

Settling the Pacific Settle Oregon and Cal because they thought Great Plains had bad farming Land dispute for Oregon (US and GB) – Many citizens came there due to missionaries

Settling the Pacific What problems will you have from going to the East to West coast? Mountain Men had knowledge of area. Created several east – west passages to the West Coast including the Oregon Trail. Mountain men were used as guides first. Then trails became visible. Anyone can now take trail (overlanders)

Settling the Pacific ► Donner Party – 87 were trapped in a storm in the Sierra Nevada. Half die. Cannibals. YUMMY. ► 1840-1860 – Indian attacks were rare. Grew as travelers moved west. Why? ► Gov’t and 8 Indian groups negotiated Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1851.

The Mormon Migration 1844 Joseph Smith killed. Brigham Young (right), new leader, moves west. Thousands moved on the Mormon Trail. 1847 stopped near the Great Salt lake. Is this route just valuable to Mormons?
