2  A new wave of immigration came after the Civil War  They came to find better jobs  Brought the non-Mormon population close to the Mormon population

3  Trains spread throughout Utah. Allowing Utahans to go to places like:  Ogden  Saltair  Lagoon

4  Cars did not become popular in Utah until 1920. This is when paved roads came around.  1910-The first plane flew in Utah

5  Utah boasted of the place where the first transcontinental Railroad, Telegraph line, and telephone wires were connected.

6  Farmers in southern Utah county using all available water sources.  Created water projects to solve the problem.  Built a dam to create the Strawberry Reservoir.  They created a tunnel that went from Strawberry River to Spanish Fork River (3 miles)

7  Albert Potter studied the land to see how Utahans were using the land.  Potter thought we should conserve the land  People opposed Potter ideas because they needed to use the land for business  Two national forests were created and a forest management program was established.

8  Industries become very popular.  They find faster and cheaper way to make goods.  Problems came about as industries came:  Health  Pollution  Poor Working Conditions

9  Miner’s began organizing to get better wages and working conditions  Formed the Utah Mine Workers  Strike when faced with 30% pay decrease.

10  Men that were polygamist before the Manifesto continued to practice it.  B.H. Roberts was elected senator but was dismissed because he was a polygamist  Later Reed Smoot was elected senator but dismissed because people believed he was.

11  Wanted to make life better for everyone.  Wanted to clean up cities/pollution  Regulate companies that polluted a lot  Regulate Railroad prices  Have safe food  8 hour work day  Workmen compensation  Educating people with disabilities

15  More people lived in the cities  Jazz became popular  “Talkies” and colored movie  Sports became a leisure activity
