Today is Tuesday, September (!) 1 st, 2015 Pre-Class: – In your notebooks, make some observations of the “stuff” in the photo to the right – even if they’re obvious. – You can include anything as long as it is visible in the photo. ALSO: – Please put your syllabus receipt in the Turn-In Box and see me with your calculator [and your name]. I have to check you off the list… – The Turn-In Box is on the computer cart. In This Lesson: Unit 0 Nature of Science, Scientific Method, and Observations (Lesson 1 of 2) http://www.oestreich.org/images/africa/Africa209.jpg

Today’s Agenda Math Pre-Test Nature of Science stuff Observation Video Lab equipment And a note about your surveys…

The Five Things You Need To Know About Chemistry 1.Chemistry is cumulative. Old topics never go away completely. Attendance is critical. 2.Chemists often have many names for the same thing. 3.Chemists are lazy. They frequently leave out the number 1. 4.Chemistry class is unique. It is like Math Class and Science Class had a baby together (and a World Language was the doctor in the room). 5.Chemistry.

How to Study? Unlike other science courses, memorization may actually work against you in this class. Yes, you will need to know some vocabulary. However, the best way to study is by doing practice problems and understanding why things work the way they do. – Throughout this semester there will be many times when I don’t complete an entire worksheet with you. That’s so you can study with those extra problems – answer keys are almost always online.

Math Pre-Test Please do your best on this pre-test (rhyme!). We’re going to grade it afterward and turn it in.

The Importance of Observations Being observant is crucial for being a scientist. You are born with some basic tools for observing. Scientists have developed other tools for observation too. http://thebeautybrains.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/12/senses.jpg

What observations did you make? Can we separate them into “types” of observations?

Types of Observations Qualitative: – Subjective observations, things like color, texture, taste. – Qualitative observations can differ from person- to-person. Quantitative: – Objective observations, things like numbers. – Quantitative observations should not differ from person-to-person.

Testing Our Observation Skills Video – What are some quantitative observations we can make? – What are some qualitative observations we can make? Stroop Test Candle Lab?

Now that that’s done… …let’s play with fire. – And other stuff.
