The Web Anyone can publish any kind of info A complete list of web sites doesn’t exist There are no organizers or evaluators Sites constantly change There are no standards for search tools

Untrue web statements “You can find it faster.” “The information is more current.” “The information is just as reliable as encyclopedias and books.”

Sources for Searching Search engines (for e.g.Google, Yahoo) Metasearch engines (for e.g. Dogpile) On-line databases ( Iowaaeaonline.org)

Search Strategies Symbols to narrow or broaden a search such as +, OR, -, “ quotation marks” Truncation and wildcards Such as *, ?, #, (parentheses)

Evaluating websites Become familiar with domain names (use site:edu) Learn to locate the author or name of an organization Learn to locate the date the information was posted on the web

Sites to start with Iowaaeaonline.org If Google, remember to use site:edu for e.g. “John Kennedy”site:edu Or use advanced search
