Succession in Ecosystems Mrs. Karim
2
Succession- a gradual changes in a community over a period of time. new populations of organisms gradually replace existing ones There are three different stages to succession: 1.Primary succession 2.Secondary succession 3.Climax Community
3
Primary succession- Life start forming in rocks, no Soil. Examples: – Lichens grow bare rock
4
Primary succession- New bare rock comes from 2 sources: 1. volcanic lava flow cools and forms rock
5
Primary succession- And the other source of rocks 2. Glaciers retreat and expose rock
6
Pioneer Species- the first organisms to colonize or grow in anew site Ex: lichens are the first to Colonize lava rocks
7
Secondary succession- sequence of community changes that takes place when a community is disrupted by natural disaster or human actions – takes place on existing soil
8
Secondary succession- Ex: A fire levels portions of a forest Soil will be left behind to start secondary succession
9
Secondary succession- Ex: A farmer plows his field
10
Climax community- a stable, mature community that undergoes little or no succession
11
Climax community- Ex: In most of Virginia, the climax community would be a deciduous oak–hickory forest
12
Vocabularies Biotic : living things. Give example Abiotic: non living things. Give examples Producers: plants …. Why? Consumers: human, animals, bacteria,… why?
