2 Drifting Continents 3.1 notes

3 Continental Drift In 1910, Alfred Wegener hypothesized that all of the continents were once joined together in a single landmass and have since drifted apart. This became known as continental drift. Pangaea is the name of the single landmass that broke apart 200 million years ago and gave rise to today’s continents.

4 Evidence for Continental Drift Mountains and other continental features provided evidence. Fossils ( trace of ancient organism ) also supports CD. Evidence of climate changes also provided evidence for Wegener.

5 Wegener’s hypothesis rejected Unfortunately, Wegener could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the force that pushes or pulls the continents. He continued to collect evidence for continental drift even though his hypothesis was rejected.
