1  1910  Alfred Wegener became curious about the relationship between the continents.  He formed a hypothesis that all the continents were once joined in a single land mass called PANGAEA  His theory became known as Continental Drift

2  Landforms-he noticed map  pieces fit together in Africa and South America.  Fossils- He noticed similar fossils were found in places that are now separated by oceans.  Climate- He found fossil remains of tropical organisms in areas that turned colder in his lifetime. He noticed continents moved toward the North and South poles are carried fossils with them

4  Unfortunately, Wegener could not find a reason to explain WHY or HOW the continents moved.  He did not know a push or pull mechanism for moving the continents.  Later scientists discovered CONVECTION CURRENTS and that helped explain how the plates move on the earth
