1 CONSTITUTION – 10 FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW Mr. Doolittle November 2009 8.2.7 - Describe the principles of federalism, dual sovereignty, separation of powers, checks and balances, the nature and purpose of majority rule, and the ways in which the American idea of constitutionalism preserves individual rights. 8.2.3 Evaluate the major debates that occurred during the development of the Constitution and their ultimate resolutions in such areas as shared power among institutions, divided state-federal power, slavery, the rights of individuals and states

16 Bill of Rights The first 10 amendments to the Constitution are called the BILL OF RIGHTS GOAL: To ensure that the national government would not be able to take away people’s basic freedoms 1 st – Speech, Press, Religion, Assembly and Petition 2 nd – Right to Bear Arms 4 th - Search and Seizure 5-8 th - Rights of the Accused

17 Bill of Rights 8. Which 3 rights and freedoms from the Bill of Rights do you feel are the most important in America today?

18 Slavery Slavery was debated when writing the Constitution, and is mentioned 2 specific times, although not by name. Outlawed by 13 th Amendment 3/5ths Compromise – Slaves counted during census and determining representation in Congress, as well as for Taxation. Slave Trade Compromise - Put a 20 year time limit on the importation of slaves from outside the U.S.. Outlawed in 1807.
