On June 13, 1831, James Clerk Maxwell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. With the exception of an older sister that died at a young age, he was an only child. His father, John, was a lawyer who was in his forties by the time James was born. James was raised by his father and his aunt after his mother’s passing.

James Clerk Maxwell was one of the world’s greatest physicists… his equations paved the way to a much deeper understanding of optics, the science of light.

They extend over a wide variety of fields, including optics, color vision, elasticity, and the behavior of the dynamical top. Maxwell was also the first person to apply the methods of probability to the analysis of the properties of gases. Maxwell founded and built the Cavendish Laboratory of experimental physics at Cambridge University, which was to be arguably the most prolific physics department for at least the next fifty years.
