PSYA4 Research Methods DESIGN A STUDY
2
“Design a study into…” You are asked a design a study question in your PSYA4 exam. You are given no indication what must be included What info would you include?
3
“Design a study into…” TIPS 10/12 marks – you have to write a fair amount! – 2 Grade Swing possible though… Think and plan before you write! It is likely that you will be told WHAT needs to be included in your answer – make sure you include everything The most marks are likely to be for the procedure so don’t undervalue this – Procedure runs from INSTRUCTIONS to DEBRIEF. If you are not asked, you should also include reference to sampling. Application to the stimulus Justify your choices – “I am using an independent measures design because…” – “I have chosen a naturalistic observation instead of a controlled observation because…”

Other tips You could be asked to write a particular part of a study / report – PROCEDURE (as before) – INSTRUCTIONS Aim, procedure, ethics – “you have the right to withdraw your data at any time; all data will remain confidential”. Include a “Do you have any questions” at the end – RESULTS Summary tables (e.g. 2x2 contingency; measures of CT and DISPERSION), Graphs, Inferential tests, Statement of results, – DEBRIEF Full outline of the AIMS and HYPOTHESES of the study. Include ethics – “All data will remain confidential and no personal details will be used. You can withdraw your data at this time if you wish. Follow up support and counselling will be provided if you require it; please speak to the researcher if you have any questions or issues about the study” Thank your participant for taking part! NB – A debrief has to be written in a structured way with enough detail so it can be read to participants or given to them.
