Big Idea 1.0- Processes within the Earth’s crust cause natural events
3
Inside the Earth Which model do you think best describes the Earth??
4
Diagram of the Earth
5
Layers 1. Atmosphere- is found above the earth’s surface, where most human activity is 2. Crust- all of Earth’s features that we can see (mountains, valleys, plains, etc.) occur in this layer. At the bottom of the ocean is where the crust is the thinnest- only 6 km thick!
6
3. Mantle- upper part of the mantle is solid and similar to the crust (this and the crust form the lithosphere). As you go deeper into the mantle the temperatures increase and rock starts to melt 4. Outer Core- temperature here are so high that the rock is completely liquid and is referred to as molten
7
5. Inner Core- this layer is still very hot but it remains solid. The weight of the upper layers press this core into an extremely hard ball. In fact it is sooo hard that it is impossible to drill through- sorry no digging your way to China
8
The Crust This is the layer that we interact with. This is where we get resources such as oil, iron, diamonds, uranium, coal, potash, etc from It is made up of solid rock but (as you know) this rock can look very different depending on where you are
10
Assignment- for tomorrow Draw the earth’s layers You will need to research the following: The depth of each layer (inner and outer core, mantle, asthenosphere, lithosphere, and crust) The density, compostion and temperature of each layer
11
Look around the room? How many things can you see that are made from natural resources? Glass is made from sand Steel from iron and other minerals Concrete from sand and gravel Bricks are made from clay
12
Now you are going to go outside and with a partner(s) make a sketch and see how many things in that sketch are produced from earth materials Are there any flower beds or grass? What do the plants grow in? Is the outside of the school covered with material made from the Earth? Is there pavement (made from sand, gravel and oil?)
