What exactly are we discussing? Should teachers and staff be allowed to carry concealed weapons Would it provide a better defense? Gun laws Youth opinion Status in society Time for a few questions or opinions from the audience

Gun Laws Protected by our 2 nd amendment Adopted on December 15, 1791 (Bill of Rights) “well regulated militia security of a free state. Right of the people to keep and bear arms” In order to protect Americans from tyranny, along with giving rights to citizens of Americans It was also established to protect the free state http://constitution.laws.com/2nd-amendment

Interviews Youth opinion Two questions were asked: Should Indiana or the federal government create legislation to allow teachers to carry weapons? Should students be allowed to carry weapons on college campuses Various responses Conducted with men and women 100% were of college age (18-22)

Men responses to question 1 Male A ( IU Southeast student) believed teachers with training should be allowed to carry with proper training. Male B (Vincennes student) also believed with training, having guns would protect students Male C (IU Southeast student) stated “teachers should not be, but staff in each building should be ready for action” Male D (Warner University student) believed every staff member should be properly armed in case of danger Male E (IUPUI student) also agreed with male d that every staff member must be properly armed.

Women's’ response to question 1 Female A (St. Francis student) believed they should not. She stated “school shootings do not occur that often” Female B (ISU student) said that with the proper training teachers should be allowed to carry a weapon Female C (University of Kentucky student) insisted teachers have the right to defend themselves along with the students in their classroom Female D (IU Southeast student) just simply said yes, teachers should Female E (IU Southeast student) believed it depended on how easy students could get them. If they were tucked away, then yes they should

Political debate “Yes” It would be strictly to protect themselves and the students in the room Having a knife cannot stop a gun With the proper training, teachers can accurately detect the danger School shootings have increased over the past years 42% believed teachers should be armed Debate.org

“Simply No” Teachers would have the option or consideration to kill or shoot a student/ staff if angry Many teachers fail to lead their classroom in general We must understand why shooters decide to kill Teachers are just teachers, nothing else 58% believed they should not be armed Debate.org

Post Sandy Hook After Sandy Hook occurred 5 states instantly outlined legislation on allowing guns Many believed if someone was armed, the shooting could have been stopped Post Sandy Hook, 44 more school shootings have occurred Huffingtonpost.com

Educational view Yes and No States would be able to properly arm and train staff 4 different states currently allow concealed carry on campus Sandy Hook principal confronted shooter unarmed and was killed 606 accidental shootings last year Guns are illegal in the UK after 1996 Columbine sheriff shot and missed 4 times Education.com

Disagree Kids and guns do not mix Teachers will misuse the weapon It would not increase safety Armed officers and increasing security are the proper way to achieve safety

Overview Members of the youth are sometimes timid to speak up It is time to protect our future teachers Times are beginning to change Schools are an easier target for shooters It is time to protect our youth
