Learning about the world Science is a way of learning about the natural world. What questions can’t science answer? Moral, ethical, or personal decisions

Scientific Theory An attempt to explain a pattern observed repeatedly in the natural world. Not guess work. Not opinions. Supported by observation. Best explanation found so far.

Scientific Law A rule that describes a pattern in nature. Needs to be repeatedly observed. Does NOT attempt to explain the pattern. Stands until an observation that does not follow the law is observed.

Systems in Science System – a collection of structures, cycles, and processes that relate to and interact with each other.

Branches of Science Life Science – the study of living systems and the ways in which they interact. Earth Science – the study of Earth systems and the systems in space. Physical Science – the study of matter and energy.

Technology Is the practical use of science, or applied science.
