Teaching Math Using Technology Author: David Moss Presentation by Emily Hunter

Background on the Author  David Moss was a elementary teacher.  He wanted to help students learn more effectively by integrating technology into the math classroom.  He was working on his master’s degree in math education at this time.

 Lot of options out there for math teachers to use  Hard for teachers to find good websites  Virtual manipulatives are important to use when teaching math  Gave some examples of technologies that could be used in the classroom Main Points of the Article

TECHNOLOGY AND THE CLASSROOM  Technology is becoming more prevalent in the classroom.  Commonly Found in the Classroom Computers Tablets Smartboards Online Websites  There are so many options that it is hard to find the best ones to use.

Virtual Manipulatives  Virtual manipulatives are interactive web-based representations of an object that can be used to increase mathematical knowledge.  Before technology, teachers used concrete manipulatives.  Virtual manipulatives add to the learning experience and allow more self-exploration.  The article also pointed out the importance of having an Internet connection at home.

The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives  A teacher can choose information based on the grade level.  Includes eModules – interactive online units Lesson Plans Online Activities Online Assessments

The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives Numbers and Operations Algebra Geometry Measurements Data Analysis and Probability

Using a TV Show: The Simpsons Website: Simpsonmath.com I have never watched this TV show. However, it apparently has a numerous arithmetic and calculus references. Relating to what they watch on TV makes math more interesting

 Helps with problem solving skills  Helps with creative thinking Online Websites A+ Click

Math Pickle  Mathematical games  Puzzles to solve  Math competitions Online Websites

Education World  Professional development  Resources  Lesson plans Online Websites

Super Kids  Worksheets  Games  “Brain Food” for the students Online Websites

Smart Boards Great way to present these websites Show virtual manipulatives Interactive learning Promotes student interest Helps keep students engaged/concentrated Helps with effective learning
