GA IN S OUTH A FRICA Purpose and Objectives of the Gender Audit in Education  To deepen the comprehensive situation analysis of education  To promote evidence-based information for advocacy  To build capacity of UNGEI partners and government counterpart offices  To inform corrective actions in programming  To inform donor appraisal processes, e.g. FTI Previously, gender audits in education have been conducted in Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe

3. Three broad categories For assessing gender equality in education: Access and participation Learner performance and achievement Quality in Education

4. Findings  Gender gap narrowing  Barriers persist  Persistent barriers could perpetuate qualitative gender inequalities and poor educational attainment

5. Policy Recommendations  Address gender-based violence through educational programmes  Adopt a coherent multi-sectoral approach to education programming  New policy development processes should be participatory  Utilize gender-responsive budgeting at all levels of education

6. Programme Recommendations  Involve other departments beyond Basic Education in the programmatic response  Schools to become multiple learning environments that are rights-based, academically effective, community engaged, health promoting, safe and protective and gender sensitive  Develop shared discourses on gender equity and equality at different levels of the system
