Imperialism ◦ To control another “country’s/nation’s/culture’s/land’s” economy, gov’t, &/or society Colony: a country/territory governed internally by a foreign power Protectorate: a country/territory with its own gov’t but “overseen” by a foreign power Sphere of Influence: a geographic region controlled by foreign power for investment &/or trade Economic Imperialism: a private business’ control of an independent, less-developed country

In-direct ◦ Rely on existing leaders ◦ Foreign council advises/trains Direct ◦ Foreigner bureaucrats control of day-to-day activities ◦ Paternalism Provide for the natives’ needs Resist equal rights movements ◦ Assimilation Force the natives to adopt the foreigners culture Religion, Gov’t (judicial system esp), Schooling, Business, etc

Benefits ◦ Economic markets opened/expanded RR & Dams constructed, telegraph & telephone lines dug ◦ Humanitarianism Improved sanitation, health = increased life expectancy Improved education = increased econ opportunities Drawbacks ◦ Land “stolen” from native ethnic groups Traditional cultures broken down Countries drawn without regard to history ◦ Diseases & Famine introduced – many killed
