STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Why a SHE code for travel (and driving) ? “It has been estimated that up to a third of all road traffic accidents involve somebody who is at work at the time. This may account for over 20 fatalities and 250 serious injuries every week.” Source HSE INDG382 “Driving at Work: Managing work related road safety”, 2003 At work (2005/06) Driving at work* Fatalities2121,000 Major injuries28,60512,500 * Estimates based in INDG382

STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Why a SHE code for travel (and driving) ? Travel on Council business is a significant hazard for staff in the course of their work – arguably more dangerous than actually working at a STFC laboratory The STFC has a responsibility to “take care of the health, safety and welfare of all its staff” - this responsibility does not end at the site gate – it includes instances where staff travel on Council business, and indeed work at non-STFC sites Travel is a factor in many STFC activities and has widespread applicability for staff
6
STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Key features Establishes clear guidance for safe travel specifically by car and overseas. Applies Risk Assessment (RA) to work travel and establishes template RAs for Driving and Overseas travel. Documented travel RAs only necessary where unusual journeys are planned – vast majority of journeys addressed by the standard STFC safety controls described in template RAs. Managers to ensure such standard STFC safety controls are in place and used.
7
STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Key points Read that part of the Code relevant to you, including template RAs in Appendix 1 Does not apply to travel between your home and normal place of work Always consider alternatives to road travel – video / tele- conferencing or using public transport Do you know how your staff get from A to B - are the controls noted in the template RAs applied ? When planning journeys –Take a 15 min break every 2.5 hours when driving –Avoid driving at the end of long working days - total working hours including travel should not exceed 12 hours, cf. RAL-DL return trips Report travel/vehicle related incidents or near misses in SHE Enterprise

STFC SHE Group Corporate Services Recognising the importance of competence in safety management - a standard appendix to each SHE code lists necessary training. Training appendices should be used by managers and staff when considering new hazards or in general as part of Annual Performance Reviews (APRs). - see SHE Code 10 ‘Provision of SHE training’ As each code is launched relevant training will be set up for staff.
