Simple Machines Simple Machines Activity Three: Other Lever Systems

Essential Questions Are all levers the same? How does the position of the EF, RF, and Fulcrum affect the way you use a lever? Can levers be combined together?

Goals Identify the effort force, the fulcrum, and the resistance force in a simple lever system. Investigate the effect of changing the position of the effort force, resistive force, and the fulcrum. Collect data and draw conclusions about the collected data. Make observations about the effort force and the effort distance relationship.

Main Ideas There are three possible arrangements of the fulcrum, effort force, and resistance force, leading to the classification as a 1 st, 2 nd, or 3 rd class lever. three possible arrangements three possible arrangements

Vocabulary 1 st class lever: fulcrum between the effort force and the resistance force. 2 nd class lever: resistance force between the fulcrum and the effort force. 3 rd class lever: effort force between the fulcrum and the resistance force.

What do I do? Read Activity 3 Reading Do Part A: Getting a feel for second class levers Do Part B: Getting a feel for third class levers Do Part C using Worksheets. Do Investigation Reflection Summary of the Activity Appling what you learned
