Function of Respiratory System Respiration means breathing bringing in O 2 and releasing CO 2

Steps in Breathing 1 st Step Take in air through the nose or mouth.

Steps in Breathing 2 nd Step Air flows into pharynx, passes epiglottis, and moves through larynx. When you swallow food, the epiglottis covers the entrance to the trachea, which prevents food from getting into the air pathways.

Steps in Breathing 3 rd Step Air travels into the windpipe, or trachea.

Steps in Breathing 4 th Step Trachea splits into two pipes called the bronchi, which lead into the lungs.
