WM’s Four Sustainability Goals Double production of waste based energy Triple amount of recyclable volume accepted Use cleaner technologies to increase efficiency and decrease carbon footprint Quadruple the number of wildlife habitat sites

Recycle Take used materials from the waste stream and then incorporate those same materials into a manufacturing process Before recycling – reduce and reuse

Recycling Questions Why do we recycle? What can be recycled? How do we collect recyclables now? Where do recyclables go? Where can we buy goods made out of recycled materials?

Why do we recycle? California legislation –AB 939: IWMB and 25% and 50% diversion SB 1020 (Padilla) – Increases diversion It is the right thing to do.

What can be recycled? Just about anything! Plastics, #s 1 - 7 Paper Cardboard Electronics Construction and Demolition Debris Used Oil Aluminum and Metal Cans Junk Mail Telephone Books Newspapers Egg Cartons (paper) Aluminum foil Tires

How do we collect recyclables now? Curbside pick-up Single stream in Woodland for residential and commercial accounts Separate container for each recyclable item at Yolo County Landfill and Davis

Buy Recycled Goods Most retailers have recycled goods Many construction items can be bought with recycled content –Steel is required to be composed of at least 25% recycled material; can be close to 100% recycled material What is your business doing?
