UofI Monsoon test stand wiring scheme. Test results with linear supplies. Test results with Vicor supplies. Conclusion… Vicor Noise Test Results Ver. 7.0

Todd Moore for the DES CollaborationNov 28, 20062 Noise Test Hardware Setup All test are run with either Linear supplies or Vicor supplies attached to original Monsoon 6-slot DHE. Remote sensing was removed & local sensing added. Noise measurements are taken with video inputs: shorted, floating, & connected to ccd emulator thru video cable supplied by Fermilab. The Vicor +3.3vdc voltage is running without uRAM.

Todd Moore for the DES CollaborationNov 28, 20063 Noise Test Software Setup All exposures are long.Monsoon is running Fermilab focalplane on cyclone:/home/monsoon/cfg/_fnal/. Sequencer for 6-slot readout is ReadType1d.ucd. All exposures are long. # of pixels for long exposure is 4146 (4096+50) rows X 2248 (2048+100) columns. Readout time is at 11uS/pixel. All Offsets are set to 1.0v. Channel 0 & 2 video inputs are used for readout. All datasets are located on cyclone.hep.uiuc.edu:/home/monsoon/data/vicor_noisetest/…. Data is analyzed for a long run using./noiselast_wrows.sh. Data is analyzed visually using DS9 or FV4.2.

Todd Moore for the DES CollaborationNov 28, 20064 NOTES: CCD TEST RACK CONNECTS TO EARTH GROUND THRU POWER STRIP GOING TO OUTLET & PROVIDES ONE POINT FOR EARTH GROUND REFERENCE. ON LINEAR SUPPLIES, ALL ANALOG & DIGITAL RETURNS ARE TIED TOGETHER AT THE SUPPLY & AT THE MONSOON BACKPLANE. ON VICOR SUPPLIES, ANALOG RETURNS ARE TIED TOGETHER AT THE SUPPLY; DIGITAL RETURNS ARE TIED TOGHETHER AT THE SUPPLY, AND BOTH ANALOG & DIGIAL RETURNS ARE TIED TOGETHER AT THE MONSOON BACKPLANE. THE ANALOG & DIGITAL RETURNS ARE CONNECTED FROM THE MONSOON BACKPLANE TO THE TEST RACK TO TIE EARTH GROUNDS AND SIGNAL GROUNDS TOGETHER. THE +/-15VA, +/-5VA, +5VD, & +3.3VD LINEAR SUPPLY CASE IS @ EARTH GROUND, WHILE VOLTAGE OUPUTS ARE ISOLATED. THE -28VA SUPPLY CASE & VOLTAGE OUTPUTS ARE ISOLATED. ISOLATED EARTH GROUND BANANNA PLUG FROM SUPPLY IS CONNECTED TO TEST RACK TO TIE -28V SUPPLY EARTH GROUND INTO SYSTEM. VICOR POWER SUPPLY CASE IS @ EARTH GROUND WHILE VOLTAGE OUTPUTS ARE ISOLATED. GROUNDING STRAP CONNECTS VICOR CASE TO RACK TO BRING SIGNAL & EARTH GROUNDS TOGETHER. UofI Earth Grounding Scheme

Todd Moore for the DES CollaborationNov 28, 20065 Block Diagram Of Grounding Scheme NOTES: RACK IS THE SINGLE POINT FOR EARTH GNDS 1. Rack is single point for all Earth Grounds, all AC Power (+ Egnd) comes from single power strip mounted on rack. 2. Vicor Case, which is fed Egnd from A/C plug, is attached to Rack with grounding strap. 3. Linear Case is mounted to Rack & thus is @ Earth Ground. 4. Monsoon Case & backplane gnds are attached to rack, which is @ Egnd. 17 Todd Moore for the DES CollaborationNov 28, 200617 Conclusion… Baseline measurements for linear & Vicor supplies are in-line with previous measurements. IE. Monsoon system is functioning normally. Adding FNAL video cable + ccd emulator caused the sigma to go up to ~25 counts RMS for both linear & Vicor supply. IE. No real difference between linear or VIcor supplies attached to Monsoon system. I don’t see the same large numbers of sigma as seen at FNAL. Ground scheme may be different than FNAL…May need to re-run some tests with different grounding scheme.
