1 Online Searching, 4 th ed. Chapter 9 ProQuest Statistical Insight Search Example 1: Finding Data by Occupation pp. 190 – 192 Librarian’s Guide to Cultivating Database Skills for Research and Instruction

2 (Statistical Insight homepage) Note the default date setting… New addition… (but not very exciting)

3 The auto-suggest (of index terms) in action:

4 Search is echoed back to us Note! Default display order is Relevance… (you may want to change it) Handy tabbed results…. The beginning of the amazing set of facets

5 Layers upon layers of facets: (Aside: these are the 2 facet groups I find myself using most often…)

6 So how shall we facet (and thus focus) our “Librarians” search? Original results: total 592, of which 521 have Tables and 79 have PDFs “Only give me results published by Associations” (leaving me with 85 results) “Only give me results published by Associations” (leaving me with 85 results) (yup! It does)

7 Faceting again “by race and ethnic group” will leave only 4… but it only takes one good one!

8 The beginning of that results page: If you don’t like what these facets produced, all it takes is a click to remove specific ones or all of them
